Death of the S600 (paging AMGtech...again)

The car is at the dealer now getting engine mounts, but this noise is what’s worrying me. It sounds an awful lot like rod knock, which would mean death for the engine. Being that it was caused by the accident, if insurance decides to total it from this, which they absolutely would, it would mean death for the S600. I love this car, but this might be a sign to just get something newer. What would you do, drop a new (to me) V12 into this, or ditch it for a CPO W222?

Obviously you need an old Maybach 62.

Yeah, but a found a beautifully specced S550 4Matic,  which means I could drive my car year round!

I drive my LS’s in the winter usually, but an AWD S class would be fun in the snow

W221s are exponentially less troublesome, or so I am told - 222s are probably that much better again.

I know a mechanic who refuses to let early W220 S600 into his shop, I suspect later ones are just as fun.

I never understand shop owners that flat out refuse a certain type a car. You’re free to charge double. Or whatever. Aka refuse to work on it.

The later engines are fairly stout, especially compared to the M137, but I’m really tempted to jump on a W222 that one of our local dealers has.

IIRC, he had two owners walk away  before the repairs were completed, and an old S600 with needs isn’t worth much - aka, he lost money. From there, never again, he just refers them elsewhere.

220s have so much else to go wrong. I don’t mind them esp in certain color combos (horizon blue with a porcelain colored interior on monoblocks , please), but it’s a tough decision unless one can do a lot by themselves.

I read MB forums a little, and don’t see much crying about 222 issues. I think the bad old days are in the past for MB now. That’s a lot of car for the money, and even still looks like new one to those not into it.

I’ve never been fond of 220. But I really, REALLY want a 221 S65 because I hate myself.

I have the money to keep it going, but it’d be so nice to not have to worry about random ABC failures, plus it’d  be nice to have a car made within this decade lol. I really love the S600, but I’m not sure if it’s worth the hassle anymore.

ABC, that’s what scares me most. Those cars, while nice, are at a point now where they are too new to be old, too old to be new. Repairs cost as much as on a new one, yet have none of the flash of a new one nor the chic of a vintage model. You really have to love the car.

Probably 10x safer choice than a W220 S65.

I can only listen on my phone right now so I can hear the noise that well. But yeah, definitely not normal. But it isn’t something I can put my finger on with audio I’m hearing. So you’ll have to take it in obviously.

I know you love this thing. And hate it. But it might be time to let go. Depending on what this noise is. Or either way. You've been wanting a 222 for a while now. And they've been very reliable so far.

So it turns out the noise  wasn’t a rod knock. They replaced both engine mounts and as near as I can tell the noise is gone. They had the shop foreman and engine specialist listen for any noise and they didn’t find anything of note. On the way home however, I was at a stoplight and my suspension decided it wanted to do a mini rodeo all on its own. No warning lights or any other indicators, just the ride height changes...I’m going shopping on Friday.

Nice. I’m glad it was easy. And I’m glad yours is new enough it doesn’t require engine removal for engine mounts.

Remember, always get a pre purchase inspection, maximum CPO if possible, and the newer the better (within a generation) . I know you know these, but sometimes we get excited and forget

I’m looking at this one right now: https://www.mercedesbenzofstpaul.com/inventory/certified-used-2014-mercedes-benz-s-class-4dr-sedan-s-550-4matic%C2%AE-all-wheel-drive-4matic-sedan-wddug8fb8ea018340

I’ll get the maximum CPO extension with it. Do you think it’s worth having it inspected if it’s already being offered as CPO?

Looks good. Not necessarily a must to get a third party inspection, but it definitely wouldn’t hurt. Or at least see if they’ll give you their inspection report. Tires and brakes need to be at least 50%, all services should be up to date, and everything else should basically  be perfect or damn close.

Apparently it’s sitting on brand new tires which is a plus. What types of service does a CPO warranty cover? Is it just breakdowns or is it stuff like a 100K mile service as well. Maybe I’ll bring it by Feldmann for an inspection. Have you noticed any reliability differences between the 2014 vs 2015 /16.

CPO won’t pay for services after you buy it, but it should be up to date for at least the next 6 months/6000 miles. But as for repairs it’s damn near as good as factory warranty. It’s not just breakdowns, it’s nearly any mechanical or electrical issue , and even lots of other issues depending on the specific part and failure. Not really, some software updates on the older ones, but that’s about it. The only reason I suggest a third party inspection is because the quality of technician doing the CPO inspection can vary, as can the she’s manager approving service and repair items. What I would do is find the maintenance schedule and verify it’s all up to date, and have your third party check for signs of severe body damage, because that can be extremely easy to miss for a lot of techs, so more eyes here is not a bad idea, and also get the dealer’ s inspection report just to verify their findings. I'm pretty sure you're totally safe if you don't do any of these things, but they're what I would do in this situation, even buying from my own dealer, just because people can make mistakes and I want to know the car myself.

I’ll definitely take it for an inspection after what happened with my LS 430. Would I ask for a VMI or what when trying to ascertain it’s maintenance history?

Yeah, and what the dealer has done as far as maintenance goes. For 60k it should’ve had spark plugs, B service, and brake flush. Trans service is due at 70k, so they wouldn’t have had to do that just yet. Air filters were due at 40k I believe. Have your inspector check the cam  sensors and ME for oil in the harness.

To be fair, the suspected rod knock would have been a result of my accident.
